Short answer: Scottsbluff and the towns around it had 9 days of hail 1 inch or larger in 2025 and 10 so far in 2026, on the record of storm reports for Scotts Bluff and Morrill counties. The worst in town was June 22, 2026, with stones of 2.5 to 2.75 inches in Scottsbluff, Gering and Mitchell. Nebraska has no single legal deadline to open a homeowners hail claim: your policy sets it.
Scottsbluff homeowners know the drill: a summer afternoon goes green, the hail comes sideways off the bluffs, and a week later the door knockers arrive. Whatever happens next, the claim starts with a date of loss. This page lists every day in 2025 and 2026 when hail of 1 inch or more was reported in Scotts Bluff and Morrill counties, covering Scottsbluff, Gering, Terrytown, Mitchell, Minatare, Morrill, Bayard and Bridgeport, the towns our Scottsbluff office serves, and then explains how to tell whether a claim for that date is still open to you.

The June 22, 2026 storm is the one most Scottsbluff roofs remember: 2.75 inch hail two miles west of Gering near the National Monument, and 2.5 inches in Scottsbluff and east of Mitchell, where one report described tennis ball sized hail on Sunflower Road. The season did not end there. Morrill County took a run of late storms in August and September, including 3 inch hail around Bayard on August 21, 2026, and reports near Minatare and Bridgeport on September 5.

Closer to Scottsbluff, June 29, 2025 brought hail up to 2.3 inches south of Gering near Janise and 1.75 inches just east of Scottsbluff, and on July 18, 2025 a 2 inch stone was reported near Janise with 1 to 1.5 inch hail in and around Gering.
Two notes on reading these tables
Preliminary dates. NOAA's reviewed Storm Events Database is the record of storms, but it runs months behind and is not always complete. As of the file published in late October 2026, it did not yet include the June 22, 2026 Scotts Bluff County hail at all, even though the National Weather Service in Cheyenne reported it that evening. Dates marked preliminary come from those same-night reports.
Missing towns. A report is filed where a spotter or station happened to be. Terrytown, Morrill and Minatare can sit under the same storm as Scottsbluff and never appear in the record. If your roof took damage on one of these dates, it is still your date of loss.
Is there a deadline to file a hail claim in Nebraska?
Your Nebraska homeowners policy sets its own deadline for notifying the carrier, so there is no single state deadline to look up. Report the storm and open your claim promptly: the longer you wait, the harder it becomes to prove the storm caused the damage. Separately, an action on a written contract in Nebraska generally must be brought within five years under Neb. Rev. Stat. section 25-205, though a property insurance policy may set a shorter contractual suit-limitation period, so check your policy.
Two more Nebraska rules matter once a claim is open. For insurance-funded work, you may cancel a roofing contract through the third business day after signing, or the third business day after your insurer notifies you the claim is not covered. And under Neb. Rev. Stat. 44-8604 a residential contractor may not promise to rebate any portion of your insurance deductible, which is explained, with your wind and hail deductible, in Scottsbluff wind and hail deductibles explained. The full set is in our Scottsbluff storm damage insurance claims guide.
How to find your own deadline
- Open the policy conditions, not just the declarations page. The declarations page shows your wind and hail deductible; the deadlines live further back.
- Find Duties After Loss. That section sets when and how you must report the damage.
- Find Suit Against Us. That section sets any shorter time limit to sue than Nebraska's five years.
- Ask your agent in writing. Give them the storm date from the tables above and ask what deadline applies to it.
The arithmetic is worth doing for the 2025 storms. The May and June 2025 dates are now 17 to 18 months old. Under a policy with a one-year notice window, as some have, those windows have passed. Under a longer window they may not have. Your policy, not this page, decides.
Not sure whether your roof was hit?
Hail damage on shingles is hard to judge from the ground, and the ways Scottsbluff roofs fail are not always obvious from the driveway. Our Scottsbluff office has roofed the Panhandle since 2001. We inspect for free, photograph what we find, and tell you whether the damage is worth a claim, including when it is smaller than your deductible. You can book a free roof inspection online.

Scottsbluff Hail Storm Date FAQs
What was the worst hail storm in Scottsbluff in 2026?
June 22, 2026. The Storm Prediction Center's reports for that evening record hail of 2.75 inches two miles west of Gering near Scotts Bluff National Monument, and 2.5 inches in Scottsbluff and four miles east of Mitchell. Two months later, on August 21, 2026, preliminary reports put 3 inch hail around Bayard in Morrill County.
Why is the June 22, 2026 storm marked preliminary?
Because NOAA's reviewed Storm Events Database had not yet added it when this page was written, even though its file runs past that date. The storm is recorded in the Storm Prediction Center's same-day reports, which come from the National Weather Service office in Cheyenne. Reviewed records often lag by months, and a missing entry there is not evidence the storm did not happen.

Bayard and Bridgeport show up a lot. Is that where the hail is worst?
Partly, and partly where the reports come from. Morrill County, which includes Bayard and Bridgeport, logged most of the late-summer 2026 reports, including 3 inch hail on August 21. But reports cluster wherever spotters and stations are, so a quieter-looking town on the list may simply have had nobody measuring that day.
